Placements24 is seeking a Senior Bridge Design Engineer for an established engineering firm in Port Elizabeth. You will lead the design and delivery of complex bridge projects across the Eastern Cape, ensuring structural integrity and project success.

The role requires 8+ years of bridge design experience, Pr Eng registration, and proficiency in MIDAS Civil, CSiBridge, AutoCAD and Revit. You will mentor junior engineers and coordinate with clients and stakeholders in a dynamic office environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required; Master's in Structural/Bridge Engineering desirable.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA.
• Minimum 8 years of progressive experience in bridge design and structural engineering.
• Experience through full lifecycle of bridge projects from concept to construction support.
• Proficiency in MIDAS Civil, CSiBridge and general CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit).
• Strong knowledge of bridge loads, materials and construction methods.

Responsibilities

• Lead structural analysis and design of highway, pedestrian and railway bridges.
• Develop detailed design calculations, drawings, specs and construction documentation.
• Perform advanced structural modeling with MIDAS Civil, SAP2000 or similar.
• Review and approve shop drawings, method statements and progress reports.

This role is central to the design and delivery of complex bridge and structural projects across the Eastern Cape region. You will be responsible for leading the design process, ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and efficiency of major transportation infrastructure. The successful candidate will leverage extensive technical expertise and project management skills to oversee projects from conception through to completion. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the structural analysis and design of various bridge types, including highway bridges, pedestrian bridges, and railway bridges.
• Develop detailed design calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction documentation using industry-standard software.
• Perform complex structural modeling and analysis using software such as MIDAS Civil, SAP2000, or similar.
• Review and approve shop drawings, method statements, and construction progress reports.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design staff.
• Conduct site visits for inspections, surveys, and construction supervision as required.
• Ensure designs comply with all relevant South African National Standards (SANS) and international codes of practice.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively to ensure successful project delivery.
• Contribute to tender preparation and business development initiatives.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; a Master's degree with a specialization in Structural or Bridge Engineering is highly desirable.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
• A minimum of 8 years of progressive experience specifically in bridge design and structural engineering.
• Demonstrated experience in the full lifecycle of bridge projects, from conceptual design to construction support.
• Proficiency in specialized bridge design software (e.g., MIDAS Civil, CSiBridge) and general CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit).
• Strong knowledge of bridge load specifications, material behavior (steel, concrete), and construction methods.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Strong leadership and team management skills.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with clients and colleagues.
• Experience with seismic design principles for bridges is an advantage.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a project-driven environment.
