Placements24 in Cape Town is seeking an experienced Bridge Design Engineer for the infrastructure division. You will shape transportation networks by designing new bridges and rehabilitating existing structures, from concept to tender documentation and construction oversight.

You will lead detailed analyses, prepare calculations and drawings, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams while mentoring junior engineers.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil Engineering with specialization in Structural/Bridge Engineering.
• Professional registration with ECSA is preferred (Pr. Eng. or eligible).
• 6+ years of progressive bridge design and analysis experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed structural analysis and design of bridge types using specialized software.

About the Role

Our client, a prominent civil engineering firm based in Cape Town , is actively seeking an accomplished Bridge Design Engineer to join their growing infrastructure division. This role is pivotal in shaping the future of transportation networks, focusing on the design and planning of new bridges and the rehabilitation of existing structures. You will be responsible for applying advanced engineering principles and innovative design solutions to ensure the safety, durability, and efficiency of bridge infrastructure. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will engage in all project stages, from conceptualization and preliminary design through to detailed design, tender documentation, and construction oversight. This is a challenging yet rewarding position for an engineer passionate about large-scale infrastructure projects and committed to upholding the highest standards of engineering practice in the Western Cape .

Key Responsibilities

• Undertake detailed structural analysis and design of various bridge types (e.g., concrete, steel, composite) using specialized software.
• Develop comprehensive design reports, calculations, and construction drawings in accordance with the South African National Standards (SANS) and relevant international codes.
• Conduct feasibility studies and option appraisals for new bridge projects and rehabilitation schemes.
• Collaborate effectively with geotechnical engineers, highway engineers, environmental specialists, and other stakeholders.
• Review contractor submittals, including method statements and design proposals, during the construction phase.
• Perform site visits for inspections, surveys, and to provide construction support as needed within the Cape Town region.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers and technicians, fostering their professional development.
• Manage project deliverables, ensuring timely completion and adherence to budget constraints.
• Stay abreast of new technologies, materials, and design methodologies in bridge engineering.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural or Bridge Engineering.
• A minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in bridge design and analysis.
• Professional registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) or eligibility for such registration.
• Demonstrated expertise in bridge design software (e.g., MIDAS Civil, CSiBridge, BridgeLink) and CAD packages.
• Thorough understanding of bridge design codes, specifications, and construction techniques.
• Experience with various bridge construction methods and materials.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in Cape Town .
• Experience in contract administration or project management is a plus.
