Job summary

Atrax Logistics SA in Cape Town is seeking an experienced Multimodal Freight Controller to join our operations. You will independently manage shipments from A to Z across air, sea and road freight, handling bookings, documentation, customs coordination, collection and delivery, and client updates.

In a fast-paced freight forwarding environment, you will coordinate with airlines, shipping lines, transporters and overseas agents, maintain accurate shipment records, resolve issues, and ensure costs

Qualifications

• 3–5 years' experience in freight forwarding operations.
• Experience managing shipments end-to-end across air, sea and road freight.
• Experience handling both imports and exports.
• Strong understanding of Incoterms and their practical application.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage Air, Sea and Road Freight shipments from A–Z, including imports and exports.
• Coordinate bookings with airlines, shipping lines, transporters, overseas agents, and other service providers.
• Arrange collections, deliveries, and transport requirements.
• Prepare, obtain, and check all relevant shipping and transport documentation.
• Coordinate customs clearance requirements and ensure supporting documentation is provided timeously.
• Track shipments and monitor key operational milestones.
• Provide clients with accurate and proactive shipment updates.
• Liaise with clients, overseas agents, suppliers, carriers, transporters, customs teams, warehouses, and internal departments.
• Identify and resolve delays, discrepancies, documentation issues, and other operational challenges.
• Ensure shipment information is accurately maintained on the operating system.
• Check supplier charges, allocate costs correctly, and prepare files for invoicing and closure.

We are looking for an experienced Multimodal Freight Controller to join our Cape Town operations team.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on operational role for an experienced freight professional who can independently manage shipments from A–Z across multiple freight modes.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for shipments from initial instruction and booking through to final delivery and file closure, while ensuring accurate documentation, proactive client communication, and effective coordination with all relevant service providers.

The role requires someone who is organised, solutions-driven, client-focused, and comfortable working in a fast-paced freight forwarding environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage Air, Sea and Road Freight shipments from A–Z, across both imports and exports.
• Coordinate bookings with airlines, shipping lines, transporters, overseas agents, and other service providers.
• Arrange collections, deliveries, and transport requirements.
• Prepare, obtain, and check all relevant shipping and transport documentation.
• Coordinate customs clearance requirements and ensure supporting documentation is provided timeously.
• Track shipments and monitor key operational milestones.
• Provide clients with accurate and proactive shipment updates.
• Liaise with clients, overseas agents, suppliers, carriers, transporters, customs teams, warehouses, and internal departments.
• Identify and resolve delays, discrepancies, documentation issues, and other operational challenges.
• Ensure shipment information is accurately maintained on the operating system.
• Check supplier charges, allocate costs correctly, and prepare files for invoicing and closure.
• Work closely with Estimating, Customs, Finance, Warehouse, and other operational teams.
• Maintain strong service levels and ensure shipments are handled in accordance with company and industry requirements.
• Support the wider Cape Town operations team as volumes and operational requirements change.
• Minimum 3–5 years' experience in freight forwarding operations.
• Proven ability to independently manage shipments from A–Z, including booking, documentation, customs coordination, collection/delivery, client communication, costing, and file closure.
• Operational experience across multiple freight modes, ideally Air, Sea and Road Freight.
• Experience handling both imports and exports.
• Strong understanding of the end-to-end freight forwarding process.
• Experience dealing directly with clients, shipping lines, airlines, transporters, and overseas agents.
• Good working knowledge of freight and customs documentation.
• Good working knowledge of Incoterms and their practical application.
• Ability to manage multiple active shipments, deadlines, and priorities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and operational accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and take accountability for assigned shipments.
• Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.

Advantageous Experience

• Experience working on ShipShape or a similar freight forwarding system.
• Experience across all three modes – Air, Sea and Road Freight.
• Customs and clearance knowledge.
• Experience managing key accounts or high-volume clients.
