Job summary

Placements24 is recruiting a Sommelier and Wine Program Director for a premier Stellenbosch restaurant. You will curate and oversee the entire wine program, procurement, cellar management, and staff training to deliver exceptional wine service.

The role requires an Advanced Sommelier certification (or equivalent) and a minimum of 7 years in fine dining wine leadership, with a passion for education and guest experience.

Qualifications

• Advanced Sommelier certification or equivalent extensive experience.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience as a Sommelier or in a senior wine-related role in fine dining.
• Encyclopedic knowledge of global wine regions, grape varietals, viticulture and oenology.
• Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills for engaging guests and staff.

Responsibilities

• Develop, curate, and manage the restaurant's comprehensive wine list and budget.
• Source wines through direct relationships with producers, importers, and distributors.
• Manage the wine cellar, inventory, storage, and stocktakes.
• Provide expert wine service, including recommendations and proper decanting.
• Educate and train staff on wine knowledge, pairings, and service standards.
• Conduct regular wine tastings and educational sessions for staff and guests.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of wine trends and regions.
• Collaborate with Executive Chef on food and wine pairing strategies.
• Represent the restaurant at wine events and industry gatherings.
