Placements24 is seeking a Field Telecommunications Technician for on-site work in Tembisa, Gauteng. The role involves installing, maintaining and repairing telecom equipment at customer sites and network access points.

You will diagnose issues, follow safety standards, and provide hands-on technical support. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or equivalent, relevant vocational training, and proven field experience with fiber optics, copper cabling and wireless tech.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational telecom training preferred.
• Experience as a Telecommunications Technician or similar field.
• Strong understanding of fiber optics, copper cabling and wireless tech.
• Proficiency with hand tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic software.
• Ability to read diagrams, blueprints and manuals.
• Excellent problem-solving and field troubleshooting skills.
• Good physical condition for on-site work, ladders, and lifting.
• Valid driver’s license with clean record.

About the Role

Our client, a prominent player in the telecommunications industry, is looking for a dedicated and skilled Field Telecommunications Technician to join their operations in Tembisa, Gauteng. This role is crucial for the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications equipment and infrastructure directly at customer sites and network access points. You will be the frontline representative of our client, ensuring seamless service delivery and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate is adept at diagnosing and resolving technical issues in diverse environments, possess excellent practical skills, and upholds the highest standards of safety and professionalism. This is a hands‑on role that requires physical presence at various locations throughout the Tembisa area.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, configure, test, and maintain telecommunications equipment, including but not limited to, fiber optic cables, routers, modems, and base stations.
• Perform routine maintenance and diagnostic checks on network infrastructure to prevent downtime.
• Respond promptly to service calls and troubleshoot technical issues reported by customers or network monitoring systems.
• Repair or replace faulty equipment according to company standards and technical specifications.
• Adhere to all safety regulations and company protocols during on‑site work.
• Maintain accurate records of all work performed, including service reports and inventory logs.
• Provide basic technical support and guidance to customers on the proper use of telecommunications services.
• Collaborate with the central technical support team to resolve complex issues.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in telecommunications or a related field is preferred.
• Proven experience as a Telecommunications Technician or in a similar field.
• Strong understanding of telecommunications principles, including fiber optics, copper cabling, and wireless technologies.
• Proficiency in using hand tools, testing equipment (e.g., OTDR, signal meters), and diagnostic software.
• Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, and manuals.
• Excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills in a field environment.
• Good physical condition with the ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and lift heavy equipment.
• Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Knowledge of telecoms safety standards and practices.
