Job summary

Garden Route Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd seeks an experienced commercial insurance professional to own a portfolio of major commercial clients. You will analyse client insurance programmes, identify risks and opportunities, and challenge insurers when necessary to make the client’s life easier.

The role requires RE5, an NQF Level 5 insurance qualification, and 5–10 years’ experience with significant commercial clients. Knysna-based, with preference for local candidates.

Job description

We are looking for an exceptional person to take ownership of a portfolio of our most important commercial clients.

This is not a traditional insurance administration role.

We want someone who will understand our clients’ businesses, analyse their insurance programmes, identify risks and opportunities, challenge insurers when necessary and make the client’s life easier.

The ideal candidate

Our first choice would be an experienced commercial insurance professional with:

• RE5


• NQF Level 5 insurance qualification


• 5–10 years’ relevant commercial insurance experience


• Experience with significant commercial clients


• Strong knowledge of commercial insurance, underwriting, policy wordings, rates, excesses and warranties


• Confidence to negotiate with insurers and advise clients professionally

However, we recognise that this combination is difficult to find in Knysna. Exceptional candidates from commercial, financial, professional services, hospitality, property, construction or similar backgrounds will also be considered.

For the right person, we can teach insurance. What is harder to teach is curiosity, judgement, urgency, ownership and trust.

What you will do

You will progressively take ownership of a portfolio of significant commercial clients and become the person who knows their insurance programme inside.

You will ask:

• Are their rates competitive?


• Are excesses and warranties appropriate?


• Are there unnecessary restrictions?


• Are important risks being overlooked?


• Is their cover keeping pace with their business?


• Can we negotiate better terms?


• Have we delivered on everything promised?

You will manage the client’s insurance relationship - not simply process insurance.

You will gain exposure to areas including:

• Hospitality and hotels
