About the Role

Our client, a reputable engineering firm specializing in transportation infrastructure, is seeking an experienced Bridges Design Engineer to join their team in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. This on-site position focuses on the design and analysis of various bridge structures, including highway bridges, pedestrian bridges, and railway bridges. You will be responsible for conceptual design, detailed structural analysis, and the preparation of construction drawings and specifications. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of bridge engineering principles, materials (steel and concrete), and relevant South African design codes. Working within a dedicated project team, you will play a key role in delivering safe, efficient, and innovative bridge solutions that enhance connectivity within the Western Cape region and beyond, based in Stellenbosch.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design of bridges using various materials like steel, concrete, and composite structures.
• Develop conceptual designs, preliminary layouts, and detailed design calculations for bridge projects.
• Prepare comprehensive drawings, specifications, and contract documents for tender and construction.
• Ensure designs comply with the latest South African National Standards (SANS) for bridges and relevant international codes.
• Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines, architects, and project stakeholders to ensure integrated design solutions.
• Conduct site inspections during construction to provide support and resolve design-related issues.
• Review design reports, calculations, and shop drawings submitted by contractors and sub-consultants.
• Utilize advanced bridge design and analysis software (e.g., MIDAS Civil, LUSAS Bridge, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
• Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering their technical development.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural or Bridge Engineering.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in the design of bridge structures.
• Proven proficiency with bridge design and analysis software.
• Thorough knowledge of bridge load modeling, material behavior, and structural stability principles.
• Familiarity with SANS bridge codes and specifications (e.g., SANS 10160, SANS 10162, SANS 1553).
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Strong report writing and communication abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment in Stellenbosch.
• Professional registration with ECSA (Pr Eng) is highly desirable.
