Job summary

The Talent Room is recruiting an Assistant Store Manager in George to support the Store Manager in operating a busy supermarket. You will lead departments such as bakery, delicatessen, butchery, fruit and vegetables, grocery, and front-end operations to ensure profitability and excellent service.

You will supervise staff, monitor daily sales and stock, uphold health and safety standards, manage opening and closing, and drive merchandising and planogram compliance to meet targets and customer

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric) is required.
  • 3–5 years of retail management experience.
  • Experience in a supermarket environment is advantageous.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office, SIGMA, and retail management systems.
  • Knowledge of stock control, budgeting, and merchandising principles.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the management of all daily store operations.
  • Ensure the store consistently meets supermarket operational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Monitor departmental performance and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and customer-friendly shopping environment.
  • Manage opening and closing of the store.
  • Monitor daily sales and gross profit margins.
  • Assist in achieving sales targets and budget objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to increase turnover and profitability.
  • Reduce waste, stock losses, and unnecessary expenditure.
  • Monitor promotions and ensure accurate implementation.
  • Oversee stock ordering, receiving, and stock-counting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with merchandising standards and planograms.
  • Investigate stock discrepancies and implement corrective measures.
  • Supervise, motivate, and develop employees.
  • Assist department managers in achieving objectives.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching.
  • Assist with disciplinary procedures when necessary.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and high-performance standards.
  • Ensure exceptional customer service throughout the store.
  • Address customer complaints and ensure effective resolutions.

Description:

The Assistant Store Manager is responsible for supporting the Store Manager in the effective management of all store operations to ensure profitability, excellent customer service, staff development, operational efficiency, and compliance with the supermarket's policies and procedures. The successful candidate will provide leadership to all departments, including the bakery, delicatessen, butchery, fruit and vegetables, grocery, receiving, administration, and front-end operations.

Key Responsibilities:
Operational Management
  • Assist with the management of all daily store operations.
  • Ensure the store consistently meets supermarket operational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Monitor departmental performance and implement corrective actions where necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and customer-friendly shopping environment.
  • Manage the opening and closing of the store
Sales and Profitability
  • Monitor daily sales and gross profit margins.
  • Assist in achieving sales targets and budget objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to increase turnover and profitability.
  • Reduce waste, stock losses, and unnecessary expenditure.
  • Monitor promotions and ensure accurate implementation.
Stock Control and Merchandising
  • Ensure stock availability and proper stock rotation.
  • Monitor inventory levels and minimise shrinkage.
  • Oversee stock ordering, receiving, and stock-counting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with merchandising standards and planograms.
  • Investigate stock discrepancies and implement corrective measures
Staff Management and Leadership
  • Supervise, motivate, and develop employees.
  • Ensure that staff members comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Assist department managers in achieving their objectives.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching where required.
  • Assist with disciplinary procedures when necessary.

Customer Service
  • Ensure exceptional customer service throughout the store.

Administration and Compliance
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly reporting requirements.
  • Monitor cash management procedures and banking processes.
  • Ensure compliance with labour legislation, health and safety regulations, and food - safety standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding company and employee information
Requirements:
  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Three to five years of retail management experience.
  • Experience within a supermarket environment will be advantageous.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office, retail management systems and SIGMA.
  • Knowledge of stock control, budgeting, and merchandising principles.
  • Valid driver’s licence (preferred).
