Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is seeking a Captain to plan, direct, and coordinate security staff across a designated facility. You will oversee Lieutenants, Sergeants, and JCOs to provide a safe environment that supports rehabilitation and healthy decision‑making for at‑risk youth.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor's degree may substitute for supervisory experience.
• Substantial knowledge of state facility rules, youth control, and relevant statutes.
• Experience in supervising/security roles within juvenile justice or related fields.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and communicate effectively with youth and staff.

Responsibilities

• Engages with youth to ensure safety, security, rehabilitation, and well‑being.
• Communicates with youth frequently throughout the day.
• Responds physically to emergencies as needed.
• Conducts routine security inspections and unannounced checks.
• Ensures proper custody, supervision, and safety procedures are followed.
• Oversees staff scheduling and staffing ratios facility‑wide.
• Evaluates staff performance and enforces disciplinary actions when needed.
• Ensures staff are trained and current on required certifications.
