Job summary

South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) seeks a Sergeant at the Coastal Evaluation and Development Center to lead Juvenile Correctional Officers in a secure environment that supports healthy decision-making and rehabilitation of at‑risk youth.

The role requires supervising posts, mentoring staff, coordinating coverage, and ensuring compliance with state laws and agency policies. Shift work and training in behavioral management are included.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• CLEE certification within six months of employment; 80% competency/proficiency.
• Knowledge of state laws and institutional rules for youth confinement.
• Ability to supervise and mentor staff and manage youth safely.

Responsibilities

• Engage with youth daily to ensure safety, security, rehabilitation, and well-being.
• Mentor new security staff and support reporting and daily logs.
• Respond physically to emergencies and conduct routine security inspections.
• Coordinate shift schedules and staff coverage; supervise unit operations.
• Maintain youth clothing, grooming, and supplies; ensure compliance with policy.
