Job summary

Glendale Unified School District is seeking substitutes for Elementary Yard Duty to help supervise students and maintain safe, orderly campuses across Glendale, La Crescenta, and Montrose. Positions are part-time, about 3.5 hours daily, with multiple shift options and a fixed hourly rate at the first step.

Under supervision of a site administrator, yard duties monitor playgrounds, cafeterias, halls, and other areas, enforce rules, support staff, and assist in health and safety procedures as

  • Supervises students and enforces school procedures in playgrounds, cafeterias, halls and other areas during assigned hours.
  • Enforces school rules, safety regulations, discipline and activity rules where assigned.
  • Works with staff to address behavior problems during recess, lunch, before and after school.
  • Escorts students to various campus locations and assists ill students to the health office.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Under general supervision of the site administrator and/or Elementary Yard Duty Leader, supervises students, monitors, supports, and controls the designated areas of an elementary school campus and parking areas, and assists in assuring the safety of students; and performs other related duties as assigned.

VACANCIES:

Various opportunities exist for substitute assignments (temporary/as needed basis). All positions are part-time and are 3.5 hours per day. Various work shifts are available. Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the first step only. Assignments may be in any part of the district boundaries (Glendale, La Crescenta or Montrose).

Based on the immediate and future needs of the district, the same recruitment may also be used to fill permanent positions as opportunities become available.

Duties
  • Provides supervision to children during non-instructional periods, under direction of a site administrator and/or Elementary Yard Duty Leader.
  • Supervises students and enforces school procedures in assigned areas of the playground, outdoor eating areas, cafeteria, indoor assembly areas, halls, restrooms, and at other locations during assigned hours.
  • Enforces school rules and safety regulations, security, discipline and activity rules where assigned.
  • Works closely with staff in eliminating behavior problems occurring during assigned work hours in the activities in which students are engaged, such as at recess, lunch, before, and after school.
  • Escorts students to various parts of the campus, and assists ill students to the health office.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Positive behavior modification strategies and techniques.
Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
  • Reinforce positive behaviors, motivate, and address inappropriate behaviors with students.
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written instruction.
  • Deal firmly, tactfully, and effectively with students.
  • Lift and carry moderately heavy objects, normally not exceeding twenty (20) pounds.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: None.

Desirable: Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

Note regarding the salary: The listed salary rate represents the first and last steps of the salary range. Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the first step. For permanent positions, the examination process will include a qualifications appraisal interview. Candidates will be notified of the date at the appropriate time.

After an offer of employment a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer, the candidate must complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (district-paid). The onboarding process includes legally mandated training(s) and reference checks. In addition, pursuant to Senate Bill 848 (SB848), the district is required to conduct reference checks that include inquiry into whether the applicant has ever been the subject of a credible complaint, investigation, or disciplinary action related to child abuse, sexual misconduct, or sexual harassment.
