Job description

Job Description

Overview

Peer Mentors at AUM are undergraduate and graduate students who help guide and encourage fellow students. They serve as class leaders who act as a support system, helping students understand course material and class expectations. The role of a peer mentor is similar to that of a teaching assistant, but without the responsibility of grading assignments.

Peer mentors receive priority registration for the semester for which they mentor.

Applicants selected to be peer mentor will be assigned to work with academic departments and must work with students in a course approved by that department.

  • Uphold AUM's mission and build community within the classroom.
  • Offer student perspectives in discussions and encourage reflection.
  • Lead engaging activities such as group work, guest speakers, and study sessions.
  • Help students with assignments and academic success.
  • Attend all assigned classes and meet with the professor weekly.
  • Hold weekly office hours in the Library Tower (or virtually for online courses).
  • Coordinate and attend AUM events with students.
  • Connect students with campus resources and services.
  • Model appropriate behavior and maintain confidentiality (FERPA, Title IX).
  • Keep communication open with professors and complete interaction logs.
  • Clock in/out and report any time discrepancies to the department.
  • Complete assessments and surveys as needed.
  • Complete training and attend all scheduled meetings.
Qualifications
  • Current full-time AUM undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA.
  • Completed two full semesters at AUM.
  • Referral from a professor.
  • Must commit to fall and spring semesters.
  • Five hours per week per course for 15 weeks (75 hours).
  • Six hours of training and workshops (four hours pre‑semester and two hours during the semester in which you are employed).
  • Mentors may be asked to participate in various EEEC activities during the summer semester, such as Orientations, Welcome Week, Mentor/Mentee Meet & Greet, etc.
  • Mentors are paired with a professor and class based on experience, schedule, and availability.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Dedicated to helping others succeed.
  • Confident in ability to lead.
  • Able to speak in front of a classroom of students.
  • Comfortable leading group discussions.
  • Ability to provide explanations of course subject matter.
