Job summary

The Lake Superior YMCA in Duluth, MN seeks a Director of Healthy Living, Sports and Recreation to oversee the Wellness Center, youth sports, and wellness programming, guiding staff, coordinating budgets, schedules, and safety across facilities.

This leadership role emphasizes community health, inclusivity, and development of programs such as Diabetes Prevention, group exercise, personal training, and family fitness initiatives, while ensuring member satisfaction and professional standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Health and Wellness, or related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in personal training and/or group exercise instructing.
• Demonstrated ability to lead individuals/classes and motivate others to achieve fitness goals.
• Ability to work with varying age groups and ability levels.
• Must have physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform essential functions.
• CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required within 60 days of employment.
• Minimum of 2 years supervising staff.
• Minimum of 2 years setting and managing a departmental budget.

Responsibilities

• Monitors the Wellness Center as members use the exercise equipment.
• Motivates and educates members in leading healthy lifestyles.
• Instructs members in strength training principles, procedures, and techniques.
• Teaches proper use of all strength training equipment.
• Ensures neat, clean, and pleasant environment on the Wellness floor.
• Hires, trains, and supervises Wellness Center staff and interns.
• Encourages growth of wellness staff.
• Understands injury prevention, emergency procedures, and professional responsibilities of staff.
