Welder/Mechanic - Maintenance:

  • Possess or able to obtain a valid TWIC.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and 3 years of driving history that is acceptable to the company auto insurance carrier.
  • Steel toe boots/shoes.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must supply your own basic hand tools.

Position Summary:

Maintenance personnel must possess highly experienced skills in forklift/heavy equipment repair and maintenance repair. Work within the container repair facility to support customer equipment repairs on containers, chassis, trailers, and all other associated intermodal equipment. Perform structural repairs as necessary to company equipment as well as fabricate special project items as required. Must be able to repair containers and chassis using welding and cutting processes

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on all shipping containers and chassis using IICL standards as a guide.
  • Welding and cutting during routine and extensive repair of containers and chassis following proper procedures set forth by DOT, OSHA, & IICL.
  • Cutting measuring; working with power tools both pneumatic and electrical.
  • Measuring and gauging damage for estimate and reparability, completing work orders, and completing inspection paperwork following IICL standards.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all support equipment as assigned.
  • Chassis maintenance.
  • Procedures and maintains records of scheduled maintenance procedures.
  • May assist in performing minor and major building and equipment repairs.
  • Assist the supervisor in developing procedures and implementing new procedures.
  • Inform the supervisor of unsafe situations.
  • Leads by example in demonstrating proper maintenance procedures.
  • Works on miscellaneous projects as needed.
  • Able to function independently, exercise sound judgment, and demonstrate initiative and tact in handling all the above responsibilities.
  • Adhering to the Company’s safety policies and procedures, those set out by OSHA.
  • Anticipated percentage of travel - 0%-5%.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirement:

  • Experience in grinding, welding, shielded gas welding, arc welding, cutting, and fabrication.
  • Welding certification from vocational-technical school, or related experience or training.
  • Knowledge and willingness to perform all responsibilities of each position within the team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, respectful and kind to self and others.
  • Presents a professional, positive, and helpful attitude always when interacting with customers and co-workers.
  • Resourceful, well-organized, and dependable.
  • Good organizational skills

  • Good understanding of warehouse operation and procedures and policies. (A plus)
  • Skilled in all types of building and equipment repair such as, (electrical, hydraulics, refrigeration, etc.)
  • Hyster, Taylor, Caterpillar forklift experience is a plus.
  • Intermediate skill level in Word and Excel.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Ability to regularly stand, walk long distances, and talk and hear.
  • Ability to frequently use hands and arms to grab, handle or feel, and reach.
  • Ability to occasionally sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, or crawl.
  • Ability to occasionally climb ladders or stairs.
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds, with assistance or lifting machinery as necessary.
  • Must wear Portus required safety PPE, Safety vest, hardhat, gloves, etc.
  • Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Working indoors and outdoors.
  • Excessive heat or cold, extreme weather conditions, excessive humidity or dampness or chilling.
  • Slippery and uneven walking surfaces.
  • Working around machinery with moving parts.
  • Working around moving objects, vehicles, and moving machinery/heavy equipment.


1 Shift: 7 AM – 4 PM Monday-Friday
OT, Weekends, and Holidays as needed.
