Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Maintain an orderly surgical field
• Prevent contamination of the field by strict practice of aseptic technique
• Protects self, team members, and environment by following universal precautions
• Participate in sponge, sharps, and instrument count as prescribed by departmental policy/procedure
• Stay constantly alert to the safety of the patient
• Remain knowledgeable about surgical procedures and can anticipate surgeon’s needs and serve as the surgical assistant as required
• Receives and transfers medications and other prescriptive items on the sterile field (from a licensed nurse to a surgeon) under the direction of the surgeon and/or circulating RN
• Prepares specimens for pathology
• Knowledge of instrumentation shall be maintained at an expert level
• Other duties as assigned
