Job summary

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a Water Meter Technician I to read water meters on assigned routes and record readings using a handheld computer. The role demands walking long distances, bending, kneeling, and occasional heavy lifting, in varied weather conditions.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or GED, at least one month of related experience, and a valid driver’s license. Overtime and weekend hours may be required to support city operations.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in accounting or a closely related field.
• Minimum of one month of related, full-time equivalent experience.
• Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
• Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Read water meters on assigned routes and enter readings into the handheld computer.
• Walk all day with constant bending and kneeling; may walk over 10 miles per day.
• Read meters that may be flooded, muddy, scratched, or cloudy with accuracy.
• Lift meter box lids up to 15 lbs. and operate a city vehicle.
• Identify and solve issues that occur while reading meters.
• Work with equipment including city vehicle, handheld computer, screwdriver/pry bar, pump, 2‑way radio, sight tube, and small hand trowel.

This position is located at 432 Shea Drive, Chesapeake, VA.

• Water Meter Technician I performs physically demanding work reading meters.
• Read water meters on assigned routes and enter readings into the handheld computer.
• Water Meter Technician must have the ability to walk all day with constant bending and kneeling.
• Must be able to walk over 10 miles per day. Walking may be for several hours at a time in all kinds of weather.
• Must be able to visually read meters that may be flooded, muddy, scratched, and cloudy, etc.
• Accuracy in reading water meters is essential and required.
• Must have the ability to lift meter box lids that may weigh up to 15 lbs. and drive a vehicle.
• The candidate for Water Meter Technician I should have problem-solving skills for unexpected incidents which may occur while reading meters.
• Equipment used includes a city vehicle, handheld computer, screwdriver/pry bar, pump, 2-way radio, sight tube, and small hand trowel.
• Candidates may encounter dogs, bees, snakes, spiders, etc.

SOME SATURDAYS WILL BE REQUIRED .

Required Qualifications
