Job summary

The City of Chesapeake is hiring a Wastewater Inspector to support its Fats, Oils, and Grease program and environmental outreach efforts. You will engage merchants and the public, inspect grease traps, and maintain accurate logs using standard office software.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED with at least one year of related experience, plus a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Conservator of the Peace designation within six months.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in environmental/health studies, engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Associates degree in environmental/health studies, engineering, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license with a driving record that complies with the City’s Driving Standards.
  • Ability to obtain, within 6 months of hire, the Conservator of the Peace designation, appointment, certification, or other credential required by the City for performance of assigned enforcement activities.
  • Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Public outreach and education, visiting restaurants, giving civic league talks, distributing public service messages in neighborhoods, and providing outreach at festivals and events.
  • Inspecting grease traps for proper installation, cleaning, and maintenance; teaching people about the right way to dispose of grease and enforcing ordinances.
  • Maintains various logs and documents inspections. Requires competence in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and database systems; must be skilled in organizing and maintaining accurate records. Reads technical instructions, procedure manuals, and interprets data to solve practical problems. Composes clear, accurate and courteous correspondence.
  • Performs other departmental duties as needed or assigned.

Typical tasks include:

The successful candidate must be able to obtain a Special Conservator of the Peace endorsement within 6 months of hire. Must be able to comprehend and apply city ordinances fairly and consistently; and be a skilled investigator, detecting violations and recommending appropriate corrective action in a calm effective manner.

Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; exercise sound judgement and be able to testify in court.
