City of Chesapeake is seeking a dynamic Facility Maintenance Technician I to support parks, recreation and tourism facilities. The role focuses on general maintenance, repairs and preventive work across park facilities, ensuring reliable operations and safe amenities for residents and visitors.

Typical duties include painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and grounds maintenance, as well as routine inspections and custodial tasks.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.
  • Minimum six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that complies with City Driving Standards.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces; may require extended hours during emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain general facilities, amenities and equipment across park facilities.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance including painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and equipment work.
  • Inspect buildings and grounds, initiate maintenance or repairs as needed and perform routine custodial duties.
  • Provide customer service and respond to service requests as directed by supervisor.

Job Description

Parks, Recreation and Tourism is seeking a dynamic Facility Maintenance Tech to join the city grounds maintenance team.

A successful candidate for the facility maintenance tech position will possess a comprehensive understanding of general maintenance and repair work along with taking pride in providing quality services.

The primary area of responsibility for the facility maintenance tech is the general maintenance of park facilities, amenities, and equipment. Performs repairs, routine, preventive and emergency maintenance on various facilities, systems and equipment. Also performs pre-use inspections, subsequent adjustments on a variety of grounds equipment.

  • Provides exceptional internal and external customer service, responds to service requests and inquires, as directed by supervisor that meets the expectations of the City’s Customer Service Initiative.
  • Performs indoor/outdoor skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work including painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and equipment repairs, furniture or fixture moving or repair.
  • Performs various grounds maintenance such as mowing, trimming of turf, landscaping, trash removal, and landscape bed maintenance, pruning trees and shrubs, weeding, spraying, fertilizing, aeration, removing dead vegetation, campsite preparation, edging and mulching.
  • Inspects and monitors condition of buildings, structures, fixtures, equipment, park and recreational amenities, pumps, septic systems, restrooms, and grounds for needed maintenance or repairs; initiates construction, maintenance or repair actions in response to inspections or work orders.
  • Facility maintenance Tech picks up and disposes of trash and debris, completes routine custodial duties.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards .

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in general facility maintenance, and repair work or other related fields.

Tree trimming and general landscaping experience.
