Job summary

City of Chesapeake Bridges Division seeks an Electrician to maintain movable and fixed bridges and related electrical systems. You will handle maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency responses to support public mobility.

Requirements include a Virginia Journeyman Electrician license, strong NEC knowledge, and the ability to work in confined spaces and at heights. This is a full-time, on-site position in Chesapeake, VA with a $3,000 sign-on bonus for eligible candidates.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of two years of related full-time experience in electrical systems.
  • Current Journeyman Electrician license and valid driver’s license are required.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced electrical maintenance on movable/fixed bridges and related systems.
  • Maintain lighting, pumps, and surveillance equipment across city facilities.
  • Respond to emergencies, including after-hours incidents and weather-related events.
  • Assist team and operate with safety as a priority on elevated and confined spaces.

What You’ll Do
  • Perform advanced electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on movable bridges and related systems
  • Maintain electrical systems including pump stations, streetlights, building systems, and surveillance equipment
  • Support electrical needs across other City departments as needed
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies, including bridge malfunctions and weather-related incidents (on-call rotation)
  • Assist Electrician II in all required duties and be able to perform duties solo in the event that there are multiple location issues or in the absence of the Electrician II.

What We’re Looking For
  • State of Virginia Journeyman Electrician Certification
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, tools, and safety practices
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code and applicable regulations
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights up to 200 feet, including over water
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects within timelines and budget

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : Requires high school diploma or GED / HSE and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in electrical systems or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards and a current Journeyman Electrician license.
