Job summary

The City of Chesapeake Virginia is seeking a Groundskeeper to join the Grounds Maintenance team. The successful candidate will help maintain parks, fields, recreation facilities, trails, and other outdoor areas to keep spaces safe, clean, and welcoming for residents.

Position includes assisting with events, operating lawn equipment, and providing excellent customer service. Work is generally Monday–Friday with some evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.

Qualifications

  • Requires sufficient instruction to perform duties or high school diploma/GED/HSE, depending on department.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with maintaining City parks, athletic fields, recreation facilities, trails, and outdoor spaces.
  • Support event logistics and setup/breakdown of equipment and tents.
  • Perform custodial duties and restock supplies; monitor safety hazards and report repairs.
  • Submit work orders and maintain related records; follow written and verbal instructions.

We’re looking for a motivated, dependable individual who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in creating safe, clean, and welcoming spaces for the community.

As part of our Grounds Maintenance team, you’ll help maintain and improve City parks, athletic fields, recreation facilities, trails, and other outdoor spaces. You’ll also assist with grounds repair and construction, special event logistics, and providing exceptional customer service.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides exceptional internal and external customer service to a diverse population. Responds to service requests and inquiries, as directed by the supervisor, while meeting the expectations of the City’s Customer Service and CARES Initiative.
  • Operates a variety of lawn and garden equipment, tractors, City vehicles, and common hand and power tools.
  • Maintains landscaping, grounds, sidewalks, fixtures, fences, playgrounds, shorelines, athletic fields, and parking lots surrounding City facilities.
  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving the repair, maintenance, and care of grounds, trails, trees, equipment, irrigation systems, recreation facilities, and related structures.
  • Provides logistical support for City-sponsored functions and special events, including the setup and breakdown of tents, fencing, barricades, and other event equipment.
  • Performs custodial duties, including cleaning bathrooms and floors and restocking necessary supplies.
  • Monitors and inspects assigned areas for safety hazards and performs or reports necessary repairs.
  • Submits work order requests and maintains related forms and records.
  • Assists with completing, organizing, and maintaining routine forms, documents, and other departmental records.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with theCity Driving Standards. Ability to obtain a pesticide certification within 6 months of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous customer service experience.

Previous work experience in landscaping, and/or facility operations and equipment. Knowledgeable of methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and general maintenance of grounds and facilities.

Understands and follows written and oral instructions, document necessary information for completion of work orders, event schedules, material expenditures and other related documentation.

Possession of, or ability to obtain Pesticide Applicators Certification within the probation period.
