Job summary

Hastings Insurance seeks an experienced property and casualty underwriting leader to serve as Assistant Vice President, Underwriting. You will provide strategic and operational leadership across Commercial, Farm, and Personal Lines underwriting to drive profitable growth.

You’ll establish underwriting philosophies, lead a high-performing team, and ensure risk-aligned growth while partnering with independent agents, policyholders, and cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and insurance education required.
• Seven years of P&C underwriting experience with at least 3 years in leadership.
• Strong knowledge of P&C policy forms, coverages, and rate development.
• Professional designations (CPCU/CIC/API/AIS) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for Commercial, Farm, and Personal Lines underwriting.
• Develop and maintain underwriting philosophies and guidelines to support profitable growth.
• Drive performance metrics like loss ratio, premium growth, and client retention.
• Evaluate underwriting exceptions and risks outside guidelines or reinsurance treaties.
• Partner with business leaders and independent agents to execute strategy.
• Maintain relationships with policyholders and cross-functional teams.
• Ensure compliance with property and casualty regulations and statutes.
• Oversee underwriting division expenses and resources.
• Promote professional development and accountable underwriting judgment.
