Job summary

Hastings Insurance Company seeks an Assistant Vice President, Underwriting to lead our property and casualty underwriting across Commercial, Farm, and Personal Lines. You will set underwriting direction, refine guidelines, and balance profitability with growth and service.

You will coach leaders, monitor performance, and partner with independent agents and departments. This full-time hybrid role is based at Hastings, Michigan, with relocation if needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus insurance education.
• Seven years of P&C underwriting experience with at least three years in leadership.
• Strong knowledge of P&C policy forms, coverages, and rate development.
• Experience applying underwriting strategy to support profitable growth.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for Hastings’ P&C underwriting across Commercial, Farm, and Personal Lines.
• Lead through others to develop a high-performing underwriting organization.
• Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines and philosophies that support profitability and growth.
• Drive underwriting performance against loss ratio, premium growth, policy retention, and customer service.
