National Veterinary Associates offers a unique externship program for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience at various hospitals. Students will learn directly from Associate Veterinarians, engaging in tasks such as patient assessments, treatment planning, and developing effective communication skills with both the medical team and clients.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship durations at Leader Heights range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for more details on the stipend program.
Additionally, an extra $500 travel stipend is offered for externships at this hospital, as listed in the link.
