An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a dedication to providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Are you considering whether to spend your externship in a general practice or emergency hospital? Why choose when you can experience both at Butler Veterinary Associates and Emergency Center! Located approximately an hour north of Pittsburgh, PA, we are a large, multi-doctor practice with high caseloads on both our GP and ER sides, a collaborative team, and enthusiastic doctors eager to teach.

Externs will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
