National Veterinary Associates (NVA) offers an externship for veterinary students at its Lincoln location, providing hands-on experience in clinical operations, patient management, and surgical assistance. This opportunity supports professional development and may offer a travel/living expense stipend for participating students.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although each NVA hospital is unique, all share common features: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians at Nebraska Animal Medical Center to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to improve their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externships last from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. In some cases, housing may be available.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
