National Veterinary Associates offers a hands-on externship for veterinary students to gain clinical experience in a supportive environment. Externs will closely work with experienced veterinarians, performing tasks such as patient assessments and treatment planning, while developing essential communication skills.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Each NVA hospital is unique, but all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Our hospital has a close-knit family atmosphere. Led by an experienced managing DVM, we are open to almost any case within our capabilities. If we can help the pet, we will bring them in! We invite you to extern with us.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view stipend amounts and HERE for stipend program details.
