An externship experience at a NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The organization is actively involved in community outreach and education. The externship may include experiences such as reproduction (35%), TCI, cryogenics, progesterone timing in-house, artificial inseminations, and C-sections.
Most externship durations at Woodlake Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for stipend program details.
