National Veterinary Associates offers a unique externship for veterinary students at their hospitals, providing hands-on clinical experiences and mentorship. Designed for 3rd and 4th year students, this opportunity allows externs to gain valuable skills in a supportive environment while working closely with experienced veterinarians.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides veterinary students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Each NVA hospital is unique, but all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. At Prairie Animal Hospital, externships are designed for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for more details on the stipend program.
