National Veterinary Associates offers a supportive externship for veterinary students to gain invaluable hands-on clinical experience. Under the guidance of experienced veterinarians, students will participate in patient examinations, treatment plans, and surgical procedures, enhancing both their veterinary skills and communication abilities while being part of a passionate professional community.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations at Lakeside Animal Hospital typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
