An externship at National Veterinary Associates allows veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. Students will interact closely with veterinarians and develop essential skills for patient care, including performing exams, diagnostics, and assisting in surgeries, while receiving mentorship and professional growth opportunities.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students a valuable opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain practical clinical experience. While each NVA hospital has its unique features, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional care to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain hands-on experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will develop their communication skills by interacting with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on the schedules of students and hospitals. At Florissant Animal Hospital, externships are designed for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Click here to view the stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
