Job summary

The City of Temple is seeking a Utility Technician Apprentice to support the water and wastewater division in Temple, Texas. Under general supervision, you will install, repair, and maintain infrastructure while operating related equipment and following safety standards.

Essential duties include repairing lines, installing mains and services, performing line locates, and driving heavy equipment. Requires a high school diploma and progression toward certifications such as CDL and TCEQ licenses.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• CDL Permit and CDL License within specified timelines.
• Tanker Endorsement within one year of hire.
• TCEQ Licenses D Water or Collection I within six months; D Water and Collection I within one year.

Responsibilities

• Repairs water and wastewater lines; cleans and inspects pipes; installs repair parts and evaluates effectiveness of repair.
• Installs water and wastewater infrastructure including mains, services, laterals, taps, meters, valves, hydrants, and related components.
• Assists in excavation; uses air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses hand tools to expose pipes.
• Cleans wastewater lines; clears obstructions in mains and laterals.
• Performs line locates of water and wastewater infrastructure per Texas One Call laws.
• Cleans and maintains tools and equipment; operates dump trucks and other heavy equipment as needed.
• Installs traffic control in accordance with state and federal manuals.
• Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Summary

Utility Technician Apprentice, under the general supervision of the Crew Leader, installs, repairs, and maintains water and wastewater infrastructure, operating related equipment and ensuring compliance with safety and traffic control standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Repairs water and wastewater lines; cleans and inspects pipes; installs repair parts and evaluates effectiveness of repair
• Installs water and wastewater infrastructure including, but not limited to, mains, services, and laterals; taps and meters; valves; manholes; air relief valves; fire hydrants; cleanouts, etc.
• Assists in excavation; operates air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses pick and shovel to remove dirt and rock from excavations; uses probe to locate pipes
• Cleans wastewater lines; uses hand and / or machine rods to unclog or clean mains & laterals
• Performs line locates of water and wastewater infrastructure in accordance with Texas One Call laws
• Cleans & maintains tools and equipment
• Drives various trucks, primarily dump trucks, to haul material related to the repair and installation of water and wastewater infrastructure
• Loads, unloads, and operates dump trucks and other heavy equipment
• Installs traffic control in strict accordance with state and federal manuals of traffic control devices
• Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
• Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

Certificates and Licenses

• Class A CDL Permit within six (6) months; Class A CDL License within eight (8) months; Tanker Endorsement within one (1) year of hire
• TCEQ Licenses D Water OR Collection I within six (6) months; D Water AND Collection I within one (1) year
