Job summary

City of Temple, TX invites applications for a Utility Technician Apprentice who will install, repair, and maintain water and wastewater infrastructure under the supervision of a Crew Leader, operating related equipment and ensuring safety and compliance.

This entry-level role offers hands-on training with street crews, exposure to excavation, line locates, traffic control, and the opportunity to earn Class A CDL permits and TCEQ licenses within specified timeframes.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Responsibilities

• Repairs water and wastewater lines; cleans and inspects pipes; installs repair parts and evaluates effectiveness of repair.
• Installs water and wastewater infrastructure including mains, services, and laterals; taps and meters; valves; manholes; air relief valves; fire hydrants; cleanouts, etc.
• Assists in excavation; operates air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses pick and shovel to remove dirt and rock from excavations; uses probe to locate pipes
• Cleans wastewater lines; uses hand and / or machine rods to unclog or clean mains & laterals
• Performs line locates of water and wastewater infrastructure in accordance with Texas One Call laws
• Cleans & maintains tools and equipment
• Drives various trucks, primarily dump trucks, to haul material related to the repair and installation of water and wastewater infrastructure
• Loads, unloads, and operates dump trucks and other heavy equipment
• Installs traffic control in strict accordance with state and federal manuals of traffic control devices
• Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
• Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

Certificates and Licenses

• Class A CDL Permit within six (6) months; Class A CDL License within eight (8) months; Tanker Endorsement within one (1) year of hire
• TCEQ Licenses D Water OR Collection I within six (6) months; D Water AND Collection I within one (1) year
