MetroWest Medical Center is seeking a Unit Secretary to support nursing unit operations under the supervision of a Nurse Manager. You will compile, transcribe, and maintain records and provide information services to visitors and staff.

Responsibilities include transcribing orders, scheduling procedures, keeping charts organized, and assisting with patient care quality audits. The role requires a high school diploma and familiarity with medical terminology, with prior Unit Secretary experience

• Must be familiar with medical terminology.
• Experience with computer use required.

• Transcribes physicians’ orders and schedules, signs patients in and out for surgery, treatments or tests.
• Makes necessary phone calls for special orders for doctors, patients, or nurses.
• Maintains current and orderly chart files; assembles charts for transfers or discharges.
• Prepares routine, confidential and/or special reports and assists with audits.
• Performs other duties as required or directed.

Job Summary

Under general supervision of a Nurse Manager and according to established Hospital and nursing department policies and procedures, the Unit Secretary performs a variety of duties including compiling, transcribing, preparing, and maintaining records in a specific nursing area or unit. Provides information and communication services to visitors and staff. Assists nursing staff in maintaining efficient and effective operations on the unit.

Responsibilities

• Records, transmits and/or files written and verbal communications to, from, and within the nursing unit to staff, patients, and physicians.
• Transcribes physicians’ orders and schedules and signs patients in and out for surgery, treatments, or tests as indicated.
• Makes necessary phone calls for special orders for doctors, patients, or nurses.
• Maintains current and orderly chart files; assembles patients’ charts for transfers or discharges.
• Prepares routine, confidential and/or special reports, documents, and records; assists with patient care/quality assurance audits.
• Performs other duties as required or directed.
