Job summary

Wright Tree Service is seeking skilled ground workers and climbers to prune, trim, and remove trees near power lines in Minnesota. You will use climbing gear, rigging lines, and operate woodchippers and saws to clear vegetation and protect critical infrastructure.

The role requires strict safety discipline, ability to travel extensively, and the stamina to work long hours, including emergencies, with some overtime. Certifications and training are provided as needed to meet industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 months of experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews, or successful completion of applicable skills assessments.
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Basic knowledge of trees and arboricultural techniques near energized conductors
  • Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1-current version and ANSI A300
  • Ability to adhere to safety requirements and coach others
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read circuit maps
  • OSHA standards knowledge for electric power generation and distribution
  • Ability to learn quickly and follow instructions accurately
  • Must be able to communicate professionally and read safety information
  • Ability to recognize poisonous plants and take safeguards
  • Must wear required PPE
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, including holidays
  • Knowledge of tree and bucket rescue
  • Ability to operate and service required tools and equipment
  • Ability to work independently and in a group
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a valid driver’s license and DOT medical card
  • Ability to drive vehicle with attached chipper/trailing unit
  • Maintain herbicide application certification as required
  • English reading, writing, and speaking required
  • Extensive travel required (>50%)

Responsibilities

  • Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs near power lines to reduce interference
  • Load vehicles with limbs and logs not suited for chipping
  • Use climbing equipment, trimmers, safety belts, lines, ladders, and pruners
  • Work aloft to cut branches, lower them with rigging lines
  • Fell trees or spars and split into pieces
  • Maintain safety around energized lines under supervision; supervise others when qualified
  • Apply herbicides and maintain records
  • Educate less experienced employees on safety and methods
  • Repair minor job-site damage and escalate issues
  • Feed debris into woodchipper
  • Set up warning signs and traffic control devices
  • Cooperate with property owners and emergency personnel
  • Inspect vehicles and perform routine maintenance
  • Report maintenance needs to General Foreperson
  • Travel during emergencies or disasters as needed
  • Drive and operate assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain punctual attendance and comply with laws/policies

Job description

  • Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs away from power lines to reduce vegetation interference
  • Load vehicles and equipment with manageable-size limbs and logs not suited for wood chipping
  • Use climbing equipment, powered trimmer lift trucks, safety belts, climbing lines, ladders, hand saws, ground saws, and pruners
  • Work aloft to cut branches or trunk sections and lower them using rigging lines
  • Fell trees or spars and split them into manageable pieces
  • Work near hazardous equipment and energized power lines under qualified supervision; supervise non-qualified employees once qualified
  • Apply herbicides and growth regulators to brush and stumps and maintain application records
  • Educate less experienced employees on company policies, procedures, safety practices, approved work methods, and OSHA regulations
  • Repair minor job-site property damage and elevate issues to the General Foreperson
  • Feed brush and debris into a woodchipper
  • Set up warning signs, barriers, flags, hand signals, traffic control devices, and direct traffic
  • Cooperate with property owners, customers, and emergency personnel when blocking streets or driveways
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment and perform routine maintenance on company vehicles, equipment, and tools
  • Report specialized vehicle maintenance or equipment needs to the General Foreperson
  • Remain on duty and travel outside the regular work location during emergencies or natural disasters
  • Drive and operate assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance and comply with applicable laws and company policies
Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 months of experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews, or successful completion of applicable skills assessments
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits, and arboricultural techniques for trimming, pruning, repairing, maintaining, and removing trees near energized conductors
  • Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1-current version and ANSI A300
  • Ability to adhere to and coach employees on company and industry safety requirements
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read and understand circuit maps
  • Knowledge of OSHA electric power generation, transmission, and distribution standards, including 29 CFR 1910.269
  • Ability to determine nominal voltage, properly use insulated tools near energized parts, and distinguish exposed live parts from other electrical equipment parts
  • Ability to learn quickly and follow instructions accurately
  • Must be able to communicate with others and represent Wright Tree Service professionally
  • Must be able to comprehend and/or read and write written and verbal job instructions and safety information
  • Ability to recognize poisonous plants and take proper safeguards
  • Must be able to wear required PPE
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, including holidays, weekends, and storm work, and be subject to call-out work
  • Knowledge of and training in tree and bucket rescue
  • Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment
  • Ability to work independently and in a group
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s or commercial driver’s license and DOT medical card, dependent upon division and utility/contract requirements
  • Ability to drive a vehicle with an attached chipper or other trailing unit
  • Maintain herbicide application certification or equivalent as required by Wright Tree Service and applicable law
  • English reading, writing, and speaking required
  • Extensive travel required, greater than 50%
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including climbing, lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, standing, walking, and repetitive motions
