Job summary

American Traveler seeks an experienced Surgical Technologist for a Level 1 trauma center CVOR unit, requiring a minimum of 2 years primary scrubbing complex open heart cases. The role includes on-call nights and weekends with multiple rooms and high acuity cases in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.

Open heart and congenital pediatric cases may be included; EPIC EMR is used. Orientation includes CVOR-specific training and 1-day mandatory education.

Qualifications

Minimum 2 years of experience scrubbing complex open heart cases.
BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

Support Level 1 trauma CVOR with 2–3 rooms daily.
Assist with complex cardiothoracic and vascular cases (CABG, valve repair/replacement).
Performs scrub and assists with circulating duties as needed.
Precept new staff and orient orientation covering CVOR specifics.

Job description

American Traveler seeks an experienced Surgical Technologist for a Level 1 trauma center CVOR unit, requiring a minimum of 2 years primary scrubbing complex open heart cases.

Requirements

Minimum of 2 years of experience primary scrubbing complex open heart procedures
Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program (not technician)
BLS certification required
Active IL license required if applicable
Negative drug screen required for all panels

Responsibilities

Level 1 trauma center CVOR unit running 2-3 rooms daily with 1-3 cases per day
Patient population includes complex cardiothoracic and vascular cases such as CABG, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissections, ECMO, VAD implants, TAVR, carotid endarterectomy, peripheral vascular bypasses, amputations, and traumas
Open heart program also cares for congenital pediatric open heart surgeries
CVOR team consists of nurses and surgical techs, with nurses also trained to scrub
Four 10-hour day shifts (0630-1700) Monday through Friday
On-call coverage required for nights, weekends, and holidays, with call frequency dependent on staffing needs (typically 2 nights/week and every 3rd weekend)
Floating to other surgical departments (general, ortho, neuro, peds, SPD) expected during low census
EPIC EMR used
Primary scrub cases off a phalan table setup
Assist with second circulating duties when not scrubbed in
Precept new staff as part of role expectations
Congenital pediatric experience preferred but not mandatory
Assisting experience preferred but not mandatory
Orientation includes 1 day for mandatory education and 2-5 days of CVOR-specific orientation covering location, surgeon preferences, and procedure types
Surgical scrubs provided with locker room access; personal lock required for locker
Primary charge nurse works M-F 0630-1500 and does not take call; house supervisor coverage is 24/7
