This remote role is Monday - Friday, with 8 or 10-hour days and a flexible schedule.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position involves activities related to the trauma registry, including data gathering, abstraction, accurate data entry/coding, validation, and reporting to meet trauma center requirements. Acts as a member of the multi-disciplinary trauma team to support patient quality and performance improvement initiatives.

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Collects required information for all injured trauma victims meeting inclusion criteria by reviewing medical records, EMS records, and hospital software. Abstracts data elements such as demographics, procedures, and diagnostic results. Enters data accurately regarding the patient's history, diagnosis, therapy, and outcome.
2. Uses scaling and scoring tools like ICD codes, AIS, and ISS to code injuries and procedures for clinical care, research, benchmarking, and accreditation, ensuring compliance with standards from the State registry, ACS, NTDB, TQIP, and trauma center accreditation.
3. Maintains the Trauma Registry database in compliance with regulations and assists with documentation and management related to research, benchmarking, and accreditation.
4. Develops and produces reports as needed and contributes to timely data submissions to agencies to maintain accreditation and verification statuses.
5. Contributes to the trauma quality and performance improvement program by identifying opportunities for improvement based on data analysis.

Performs functions independently with limited supervision. No budget responsibilities. Interacts with physicians, clinical staff, trauma team, and external agencies. Ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and standards, providing excellent service aligned with Banner Health’s core behaviors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education equivalent to a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or certified coder, including advanced medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Completion of ATS trauma registrar course and AIS training within one year of hire. Two or more years of experience in coding, abstraction, or data management. Ability to interpret medical records and abstract data accurately. Excellent organizational, communication, and data entry skills. Proficiency with office software, trauma registry software, electronic medical records, databases, and spreadsheet programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

RHIT or RHIA certification, CPC, CSTR, trauma registry experience, or related education/experience.
