Under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans, the incumbent performs a variety of engineering tasks in office and field settings. Responsibilities include ensuring contractor compliance with contract documents (Standard Plans, Specifications, and Provisions), supporting field engineers, and potentially acting as an Assistant Resident Engineer or Resident Engineer. Work ranges from average to high difficulty levels.

Candidates must review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs). If MQs are met under Pattern II and a TE Civil in-person written exam is required, do not take the online exam before passing the written exam, as it may affect eligibility. Eligibility may depend on your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. If you lack current eligibility, you must be on the state exam list to qualify. To apply, search the classification title on the exam application portal.

Who May Apply: Current employees in the classification, eligible for transfer, reinstatement, list, LEAP, or SROA/Surplus; priority given to SROA/Surplus candidates. Those eligible for Training and Development assignments may also apply.
