Job summary

Burgess & Niple in Cincinnati is seeking a Transportation Civil Engineer Co-op for Spring or Summer 2027 to join our team of engineers and gain hands-on experience in transportation design and consulting.

You will learn design and analysis for projects for state DOTs and local municipalities, using MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer or AutoCAD/Civil3D, and develop reports and construction plans while building problem-solving and collaboration skills.

Qualifications

• Current undergraduate student pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Completion of one year coursework required.
• Strong interest in transportation engineering; co-op experience is a plus.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
• Able to learn PDF markup tools (BlueBeam Revu or Adobe Acrobat) and design software.
• Excellent communication and collaborative skills.

Responsibilities

Gain practical experience in transportation engineering with our team as a Transportation Civil Engineer Co-op for Spring or Summer semester 2027. In this role, you'll work alongside early career and experienced engineers to gain an understanding of transportation design and consulting. You'll gain hands‑on experience across areas that could include geometric design, drainage, pavement, or bridge rehabilitation, while developing the technical skills and problem‑solving abilities that will create a foundation for your career.

What You’ll Do

• Under the direction of experienced technical staff, you’ll learn design and analysis skills for a variety of transportation engineering design projects for state DOTs and/or local municipalities
• Projects may include roadway and highway geometric design, pavement rehabilitation design, drainage design, or traffic signage and analysis
• Assist engineers with developing reports, project scoping and final design, such as developing construction plans, cost estimates, and specifications using design tools such as MicroStation and AutoCAD

Skills & Qualifications

• Current undergraduate student in good academic standing pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program and completion of one year coursework required
• A strong interest in transportation engineering; previous co‑ops are a plus
• Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook, Excel, and Word
• Ability to learn PDF markup/review tools, such as BlueBeam Revu or Adobe Acrobat
• Ability to learn MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer or AutoCAD/Civil3D drawing software packages, direct experience is a plus
• Excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate, learn, and grow

Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 30 – 40 hours per week. Housing and transportation to/from work is the responsibility of the co‑op, parking is provided.
