Job summary

Burgess & Niple invites a student to join our Water/Wastewater Civil Engineer Co‑op in Akron, OH, to learn design and consulting across sewers, mains, lift stations, and treatment facilities.

You will gain hands-on experience with AutoCAD/REVIT, PDF markup tools, and MS Office while developing problem-solving skills and collaborating with experienced engineers on real projects.

Qualifications

• Current undergraduate student pursuing a BS in Civil or Environmental Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; completion of one year coursework required.
• A strong interest in water/wastewater engineering; previous co-ops are a plus.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, and Word.
• Ability to learn PDF markup/review tools such as BlueBeam Revu or Adobe Acrobat.
• Ability to learn AutoCAD or REVIT design software; direct experience is a plus.
• Excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate, learn, and grow.
• Availability to work full-time {{Season and Year}} Semester.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record; some travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of experienced staff, learn design analysis for civil water/wastewater projects for local municipalities or water districts.
• Projects may include gravity sewers, force mains, lift stations, water mains, booster stations, rehabilitation projects, and treatment facilities.
• Assist engineers with project design and drawing, including construction plans, cost estimates, and specifications using AutoCAD or REVIT.
• Assist with field work or construction-related services including construction observation, shop drawing reviews, RFIs, and field inspections.

Gain practical experience in civil engineering focusing on water/wastewater projects with our team as a Water/Wastewater Civil Engineer Co-op. In this role, you’ll work alongside early career and experienced engineers to gain an understanding of water/wastewater design and consulting. You’ll gain hands‑on experience across areas that could include sewers, mains, lift and booster stations, rehabilitation projects, and water and wastewater treatment facilities while developing the technical skills and problem‑solving abilities that will create a foundation for your career.

What You’ll Do

• Under the direction of experienced technical staff, you’ll learn design analysis skills for a variety of civil water/wastewater engineering design projects for local municipalities or water districts
• Projects may include gravity sewers, force mains, lift stations, water mains, booster stations, rehabilitation projects, and water and wastewater treatment facilities
• Assist engineers with project design and drawing, such as developing construction plans, cost estimates, and specifications using design tools such as AutoCAD or REVIT
• Assist with field work or construction related services including construction observation, shop drawing reviews, response to requests for information, and perform field inspections, as needed

Skills & Qualifications

• Current undergraduate student in good academic standing pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field from an ABET‑accredited program and completion of one year coursework required
• A strong interest in water/wastewater engineering; previous co‑ops are a plus
• Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook, Excel, and Word
• Ability to learn PDF markup/review tools, such as BlueBeam Revu or Adobe Acrobat
• Ability to learn AutoCAD or REVIT design software packages, direct experience is a plus
• Excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate, learn, and grow
• Availability to work full‑time {{Season and Year}} Semester
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record; some travel may be required

Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 30 – 40 hours per week. Housing and transportation to/from work is the responsibility of the co‑op, parking is provided.
