Job summary

Burgess & Niple seeks a Transportation Civil Engineer Co-op in North Carolina to work with seasoned engineers on transportation design and consulting projects. Qualifications

• Current undergraduate pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• One year of coursework completed; strong interest in transportation engineering.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook/Excel/Word) preferred.
• Ability to learn PDF markup tools and CAD software quickly.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Learn design and analysis skills for transportation engineering projects for state DOTs and local municipalities.
• Assist with traffic/safety analysis, roadway geometry, drainage, and planning or surveying tasks.
• Support engineers with reports, scoping, and final design using MicroStation and AutoCAD.

Gain practical experience in transportation engineering with our team as a Transportation Civil Engineer Co-op. In this role, you'll work alongside early career and experienced engineers to gain an understanding of transportation design and consulting. You'll gain hands-on experience across areas that could include geometric design, drainage, or pavement rehabilitation, while developing the technical skills and problem-solving abilities that will create a foundation for your career.

What You'll Do

• Under the direction of experienced technical staff, you'll learn design and analysis skills for a variety of transportation engineering design projects for state DOTs and/or local municipalities
• Projects may include traffic or safety analysis, roadway and highway geometric design, pavement rehabilitation design, drainage design, transportation planning or surveying
• Assist engineers with developing reports, project scoping and final design, such as developing construction plans, cost estimates, and specifications using design tools such as MicroStation and AutoCAD

Skills & Qualifications

• Current undergraduate student in good academic standing pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program and completion of one year coursework required
• A strong interest in transportation engineering; previous co-ops are a plus
• Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook, Excel, and Word
• Ability to learn PDF markup/review tools, such as BlueBeam Revu or Adobe Acrobat
• Ability to learn MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer or AutoCAD/Civil3D drawing software packages, direct experience is a plus
• Excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate, learn, and grow

Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 30 - 40 hours per week. Housing and transportation to/from work is the responsibility of the co-op, parking is provided.
