Job summary

Xcel Energy is offering an internship for students in electrical engineering to assist protection engineers with system studies, event data gathering, and modeling of power system components. You will learn how the transmission grid works and how protection schemes operate while gaining hands-on experience in data analysis and reporting.

Preferred candidates are ABET-accredited EE students who can work full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year, with a hybrid work

Qualifications

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher.
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) / part time during the school year (<4 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person per hybrid policy.
  • ABET-accredited EE program and ongoing pursuit of BSc EE.

Responsibilities

  • Modeling of power system components for short circuit studies.
  • Using substation metering and relaying diagrams to model relay and zone of protection.
  • Gathering event information for event analysis.
  • Fulfilling data modelling from transmission portfolio delivery/capital projects.
  • Fulfilling short circuit study requests from departments (MISO, ISP).
  • Doing data reporting and analysis on power system network.

Opportunities for students to assist protection engineers in doing system studies, collecting and gathering information from system events, and having a better understanding of how our transmission grid works and how to protect it.

Internship Responsibilities
  • Modeling of power system components for short circuit studies
  • Using substation metering and relaying diagrams to model the relay and zone of protection
  • Gathering event information (Weather, lightning, fault records) for event analysis
  • Fulfilling data modelling from transmission portfolio delivery/capital projects
  • Fulfilling short circuit study request from various departments (MISO,ISP)
  • Doing data reporting and analysis on power system network

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements
  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (less than 4 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy
Preferred Qualifications
  • Able to communicate in written and spoken English well
  • Able to use a computer
  • Have taken basic Calculus level math, and some Physics
  • Able to work in the office Tues-Wed-Thu 8-4 in the summer

Pay and Benefits

Non-Bargaining The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 to $24.60 per hour
