Job summary

Xcel Energy is offering an Outage Coordination Engineer Intern position to gain hands-on experience in transmission operations. You will support outage planning, studies, and coordination alongside engineers, operators, and project managers in a hybrid in-person setting.

The internship runs with a May 31, 2027 start date and requires active enrollment in an engineering program with ABET accreditation, a willingness to work up to 40 hours weekly in summer, and up to 20 hours during the school

Qualifications

  • Current student, sophomore or higher as of Fall 2027.
  • Enrolled in ABET accredited college or university pursuing an Engineering degree.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) and part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours/week).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct real-time and day-ahead studies of the transmission system.
  • Coordinate, sequence, plan and process outage requests on the transmission system.
  • Analyze outage impacts and prepare reports, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Learn transmission operations, reliability, and safety requirements while supporting outage planning.

The Outage Coordination Engineer Intern supports the planning, coordination, and analysis of transmission and substation outages to ensure system reliability and safe execution of construction and maintenance activities. Working closely with Outage Coordination Engineers, System Operators, Project Managers, and field personnel, the intern gains exposure to electric transmission operations, outage scheduling processes, and power system reliability considerations.

  • Conduct real time and day-ahead studies of the transmission system.
  • Coordinate, sequence, plan and process requests for outages on the transmission system.
  • Analyze outage impacts and prepare reports, spreadsheets, and presentations supporting outage coordination decisions.
  • Learn and apply transmission operations, reliability, and safety requirements while supporting real-world outage planning activities.

This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher (as of Fall 2027)
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Engineering
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
  • Interest in the energy industry and the future of energy.

Non-Bargaining The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 to $23.10 per hour
