Job summary

MBTA is offering an Operations Planning, Scheduling, and Strategy Intern position to support multiple teams in designing reliable, accessible transit services. The role provides mentorship and onsite work for at least three months (December–February) with a 40-hour work week.

You will engage with planners, dispatchers, and operators, perform data analyses in Excel, prepare communications, and help structure bus routes and alternate services as needed.

Qualifications

• Enrolled for entire duration of the internship in an undergrad/bachelor's degree program.
• Completed coursework or experiences showing interest in public transportation.
• At least one year of professional experience in planning, operations, policy, engineering, or project management.
• Experience with GIS, databases, or visualization tools.
• Ability to pass writing and/or spreadsheet assessments and communicate effectively in English.

Responsibilities

• Support MBTA staff in the field, communicating with planners, dispatchers, inspectors, and operators.
• Conduct peer research on industry best practices and innovations.
• Prepare presentations, memos, letters, maps, and data to support planning efforts.
• Coordinate meetings, including scheduling and agenda setting.
• Assist Schedules team by communicating schedule changes and updating signage.
• Provide data analyses using Excel to create charts and visualizations.
• Monitor projects and patterns that may impact public transportation.
• Offer planning support for bus routes, stops, and schedules.
• Support alternative service planning during planned or emergency closures.
• Participate in meetings, fieldwork, and other duties as needed.
