The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) offers an Associate Engineer internship for undergraduate and graduate students seeking hands-on experience in Operations. Interns work with mentors to solve real problems affecting Metro’s customers and employees.

Locations include office and field work across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, with rotations through Bus/Rail Operations, Safety, IT, Planning and general business functions.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent; attending an accredited college/university pursuing a related degree.
• Major/area must align with the internship assignment and academic requirements.
• Must have completed freshman year and be entering sophomore year.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8.
• Performance in prior summer (where applicable) favorable for subsequent summers.

Responsibilities

• Duties vary by department; intern will assist in data collection, verification and reporting.
• Research data for management, operations, technical and administrative reports; use memoranda, fiscal and operations data.
• Produce tangible work products such as presentations, reports, and data visualizations.
• Review reports and identify issues; propose solutions with guidance from supervisors.
• Attend trainings and meetings to gain exposure to transit functions and departmental activities.
• Participate in or lead departmental meetings and working sessions.
