Summary: Maintain and repair all aspects of the Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network from the Hubsite and/or OTN cabinet to the passive network devices including any and all PON nodes and their associated power supplies; assists with training and development of other System Technician-FTTH technicians; occasionally and with direction provides day-to-day engineering and operations support to the department.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assessment, maintenance and repairs for hubsite/OTN cabinet, outside FTTH distribution plant, and general plant components
- Maintain hubsite/OTN hardware and powering needs and maintenance
- Test FTTH, PON, and HFC plant and components using: Signal Level Meter (SLM), Volt-Ohm-Meter (VOM), OTDR, optical power meter, spectrum analyzer and compare findings with documentation
- Perform basic DC wiring from equipment to Telect panels
- Troubleshoot/repair problems with light, RF, AC, and DC portion of forward and reverse plant for transmission levels, signal losses and other interference
- Perform routine remote OLT setup and balancing, alignment and adjustment of passive components and equipment used to process signals from the OLT to any subscriber port and/or subscriber ONT
- Perform basic underground and aerial construction duties associated with PON (DWDM) operations such as replacement of defective/damaged optical splitters and subscriber ports
- Maintains, repairs and replaces optical components of the remote OLT
- Perform routine business subscriber connection duties such as running/hanging fiber drop and utilize handheld splicer to complete connections
- Performs and/or assists with emergency fiber restoration.
- Perform analysis of system performance reports and subsequent preventive and remedial activities
- Understand/apply FCC and NESC technical standards, including performing FCC required testing
- Identify and report all incidents of noncompliance (FCC, NESC, OSHA and WOW! standards)
- Perform networking related troubleshooting including SQC test, trace route and speed test
- Perform Power Supply installation, maintenance and repair and have a basic understanding of our Continuity PS status monitoring system
- Perform Field Ops-Engineering walkouts
- Maintain excellent attendance and appearance
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Possess a firm understanding or fiber network for troubleshooting and fault resolution assistance
- Able to present technical information to a non-technical audience
- Able to work independently
- Able to use assigned test equipment including but not limited to Signal Level Meter (SLM), Volt Ohm Meter (VOM), OTDR and optical power meter, and other various optical T&T equipment
- Ability to safely assist and/or perform pole transfers within company and NEC guidelines
- Ability to raise, lower, re-tension, delash and relash existing plant
- Able to prioritize and organize assignments and responsibilities
- Able to accurately maintain records, logs, reports, work orders, etc
- Able to work flexible hours as required including evenings, weekends and on-call shifts
- Must have a valid (state) driver’s license and maintain driving record that meets the Company’s insurance carrier’s requirements
Education
Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent
Experience / Skills Needed
- 3 -5 years of System Maintenance experience (or equivalent in training and experience) and/or related associate’s degree is preferred
- Industry standard fiber certifications a plus
- Computer Skills: MS Suite, Internet software, E-mail, basic understanding of Google Suite

- Regularly required to talk and hear
- Required to use close vision and be able to focus, ability to adjust focus and to see colors
- Must be able to meet the physical limit requirements of personal protective equipment, aerial lift equipment, ladders and/or gaffs that may be used in this position
- Ability to work while standing most of the time
- Ability to walk or work over all types of terrain, in all types of weather
- Ability to carry tools and equipment including ladders and tool belts
- Ability to work in tight spaces while bending, twisting and reaching
- Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder (approx. 28’ & 75lbs)
- Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires
- Ability to perform work in elevated places (i.e., roofs and utility poles)
- Ability to use drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers and other hand tools
- Ability to move, crawl, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, pull, push, and grasp
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
- Physically able to operate computer equipment and test equipment
- Ability to work in environments that may have dust, dirt, noise, reptiles and insects and cleaning solutions
- Ability to work safely near power lines and electrical equipment
- Ability to drive company vehicles in a safe manner
