Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a dedicated Swim Instructor to lead swimming lessons and empower students to grow in water safety and technique. This role emphasizes building genuine connections with families and delivering high-quality instruction in a supportive environment.

The successful candidate will maintain records, participate in trainings, and uphold YMCA safety policies while promoting community-friendly programs and volunteer involvement.

Qualifications

• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification.
• If Red Cross WSI certified must crossover to YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor within 180 days of employment.
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications (or equivalent).
• Must demonstrate swim instructor skills to YMCA standards.
• Must be at least 16 years of age.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons per YMCA guidelines using prepared lesson plans.
• Builds authentic relationships with students and parents and engages volunteers.
• Communicates program information and refers to other YMCA offerings as needed.
• Completes required staff orientation and safety training.
• Maintains attendance and progress records.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follows all YMCA policies and safety procedures, and reports incidents.
• Organizes class equipment and reports damaged items.
• Adheres to safety and COVID-19 prevention practices.
• Assists in other areas and completes projects as assigned.
