Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Swim Lesson Instructor to lead swimming classes, following YMCA guidelines and using prepared lesson plans to deliver engaging, safety‑driven instruction. You will build authentic relationships with students and parents, encourage involvement, and help connect families with the YMCA.

Requirements include a YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification, ASHI BLS/First Aid/Oxygen Administration, and the ability to demonstrate YMCA‑standard swim skills.

Qualifications

• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification.
• ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent).
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• At least 16 years of age.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, using prepared lesson plans.
• Builds authentic relationships with students and parents; encourages parent involvement and volunteers.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students/parents to other programs as appropriate.
• Completes new staff orientation trainings including bloodborne pathogens and child abuse prevention.
• Maintains records (attendance, progress reports).
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follows YMCA policies and safety procedures; completes incident/accident reports as needed.
• Organizes and stores class equipment; reports damaged equipment.
• Performs COVID-19 safety measures and maintains cleanliness.
