Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a dedicated Swim Lesson Instructor to lead and motivate students in swim classes, ensuring safety and progress. You will build strong relationships with families, coordinate with program staff, and maintain accurate attendance and progress records.

Responsibilities include delivering YMCA-guided lessons, conducting orientations, and participating in trainings and safety protocols to support the community’s water skills and confidence.

Qualifications

• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification.
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent).
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• At least 16 years of age.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, using prepared lesson plans accordingly
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate, refers students and parents to other programs
• Completes new staff orientation training as required, including bloodborne pathogens and child abuse prevention
• Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.)
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment
• Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 prevention
• Assists in all areas and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor
