Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas is seeking a Surg Scheduler to coordinate patient scheduling for the department. Under general supervision, you will obtain required information from surgeons and schedule procedures across hospitals and ambulatory centers.

The role requires a high school diploma and at least two years in a medical office, with exposure to billing, coding and pre-certification processes. Strong organizational skills and HIPAA compliance are essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2 years of experience working in a medical office environment.
• Exposure and working knowledge of physician billing, medical collections, coding and surgery scheduling and/or patient access.
• 2 years of college.
• 1 year of healthcare scheduling and/or surgery scheduling.

Responsibilities

• Schedules patient surgical procedures at various entities (University Hospitals, Ambulatory Surgery Centers) in accordance with established protocols; acquires the appropriate information and orders from the surgeon.
• Provides pre-certification of all procedures to ensure coverage and proper billing procedures; may obtain insurance pre-certification and contact insurers for confirmation; advise clinic/patient on co-payment or co-insurance responsibility.
• May be responsible for accurately entering scheduling, insurance and registration information into the appropriate system(s).
• Maintains surgical block time and notifies surgeons of unused time; releases unused time to prevent loss of department time.
• Requests and secures tissue from Tissue Bank/Transplant Services for timely delivery during surgery to avoid delays.
• Requests and/or obtains ordered materials/equipment needed for surgery and confirms with the surgeon.
• May research claims on payment denials from third party carriers for pre-certified procedures.
• Acts as liaison with other departmental staff for coordination of multiple/special procedures.
• Adheres to HIPAA and confidentiality policy at all times.
• Duties may include direct patient interaction and maintenance of patient records.
