Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Student Nurse Extern for the Surgical Observation Unit in Chapel Hill, NC. This temporary full-time externship (May 24 – July 31, 2027) provides prelicensure nursing students with immersive clinical experience under RN supervision.

The SNE I will assist with routine patient care, participate in safety reporting, and support families during admission, orientation, and discharge. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and be enrolled in an accredited nursing

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; enrollment in nursing program within 12 months time from start of externship.
Nursing Assistant I listed by NC DHHS; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
No professional experience required.
Fluent in English; able to organize and prioritize patient care; basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

Observe, collect, and document patient information; report changes to RN or provider.
Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
Provide care/treatments per plan of care (vital signs, wound care, glucose checks, catheter care, etc.).
Provide direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
Support care team with indirect tasks (cleaning, restocking, transports, orientation of new staff)
